What it handles
- Division by zero is answered in words, not with an error code: nothing can be a share of zero.
- Rounding happens on the decimal digits, so 1.005 at two decimals gives 1.01 rather than 1.00.
- The exact value appears under a result whenever rounding hid something, and that value is what the keyboard shortcut copies.
- Change from a negative number is measured against its distance from zero, so −10 to 10 is an increase of 200%.
- Negative percentages work everywhere: adding −20% gives the same number as taking 20% off.
- The address bar keeps the row you last used and its two numbers, so a link you send opens on the same calculation.
FAQ
How do I work out what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. The second row does it for you: put 45 in the first box and 180 in the second, and it answers 25%. The order matters. If the answer is above 100%, the first number is larger than the second, which is normal for growth figures.
What is the difference between a percent and a percentage point?
A percentage point is the plain difference between two percentages. A rate moving from 4% to 5% rises by one percentage point, but that is a 25% increase, because one is a quarter of four. Use the third row for the 25%; the percentage point figure is simple subtraction, so this tool leaves it to you.
Why can the calculator not give a change from zero?
Percentage change divides by the number you started from. Dividing by zero has no answer, so any move away from zero has no percentage: going from nothing to something is not 100% more, it is undefined. The row tells you that in words. If both numbers are zero, the answer is no change.
How do I find the price before tax or before a discount?
Use the last row. A total of 119 that already includes 19% tax was 100 before it: type 119 and 19, and leave the switch on more. For a sale price, flip the switch to less. A jacket at 64 after 20% off started at 80, not at 76.80, which is where adding 20% back would land you.
Are the numbers I type sent anywhere?
No. The arithmetic runs in the page itself, so nothing leaves your device and nothing is logged. Once the page has loaded it works offline. Your five rows and your rounding choice are kept in this browser only, so the tool opens where you left it, and Clear removes them.
