Other versions

Area matters when you compare things that are listed in different units: a flat of 65 m² against one advertised at 700 sq ft, a plot of land in acres against a field in hectares, a national park in square kilometers against a county in square miles. Type the area, choose the units and read the result as you type; the table shows the same area in all eleven units, so 65 m² is 699.65 ft², 77.74 yd² and 0.0065 ha at once. Because area is length squared, every factor is the squared length factor, so an inch of 2.54 cm gives a square inch of 6.4516 cm² exactly. Nothing leaves the page.

How to use

  1. Type the area, for example 65.
  2. Pick the unit you have and the unit you want; square meters to square feet is preset.
  3. Swap them to convert the other way.
  4. Check hectares, acres or square yards in the table.

What it handles

  • Eleven units: mm², cm², m², are, hectare, km², in², ft², yd², acre and mi².
  • Exact factors from the squared length definitions: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², 1 acre = 4046.8564224 m².
  • The are (100 m²) and the hectare (10 000 m²) are included for land registers and farming.
  • Tiny results switch to scientific notation, so 1 mm² in square miles reads as 3.861e-13 rather than a row of zeros.

FAQ

How many square feet are in a square meter?

10.7639 square feet. So a 65 m² flat is about 700 sq ft and a 100 m² house is about 1076 sq ft. Going the other way, one square foot is 0.0929 m², so divide square feet by 10.764 to get square meters. The table on this page does both directions at once.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

A hectare is 10 000 m², a square of 100 m by 100 m. An acre is 4046.86 m², about 0.4047 ha, so a hectare is roughly two and a half acres. Hectares are used in most of the world and in official statistics; acres remain common in the US, the UK and in land listings written in English.

Can I convert a length in feet into square feet?

Not directly: area needs two lengths. Multiply the length by the width in the same unit first, and then convert the area. A room of 4 m by 3.5 m is 14 m², which this page turns into 150.7 ft². If the sides are in different units, convert one of them on the length page before multiplying.

Why does a small number show as 3.861e-13?

That is scientific notation, meaning 3.861 × 10⁻¹³, because writing out twelve zeros after the decimal point would be unreadable. The page switches to it below 0.000001 and from 1 000 000 000 000 000 up. The raw value uses the same form with an e, which spreadsheets and programming languages read as a number.
